Is the blackberry locked? Because I need to use it outside the US.
-Fatma

  • Re: locked? 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: locked? 0 Post(s) Reply Yes, all phones offered by major U.S. carriers are locked. The Tour is a global device, which means that you can use it outside the U.S., but you will continue to use the Verizon service and therefore will pay a hefty bill. If you plan to use your phone extensively outside the U.S., you should look for an already unlocked device.

Son is in Brazil now, only mode of communication now reliable is Blackberry. I am totally sold...is this the model best suited for my son who travels 3-4 times a year at times, outside the US?
-gene irelan

  • Re: Blackberry Tour 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: Blackberry Tour 0 Post(s) Reply The BlackBerry Tour would certainly meet your son's needs in terms of being a quad band global phone. However, depending on his specific phone needs while abroad, I would recommend researching Verizon's international rates and offers. Often, U.S. carriers' rates for international use are still very high. If he spends long periods of time abroad (especially if it's in the same country), I would also suggest looking into purchasing a unlocked phone (perhaps still a BlackBerry) and using a SIM card from a local carrier in the country.

I travel to India frequently. If i buy this, can I use a LOCAl SIM CARD when i am in INDIA rather than using this plan.
-sandeep

  • Re: Local Sim Card 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: Local Sim Card 0 Post(s) Reply Yes and no. You can use local sims if you unlock the sim portion of your Tour, which can be done by calling Verizon. However, typically you'll need to stay with Verizon for 3 months before getting the unlock code.

  • Re: blackberry as a gift 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: blackberry as a gift 0 Post(s) Reply Unfortunately, the BlackBerry Storm is locked to the Verizon Wireless network, so you will not be able to purchase an unlocked Storm through LetsTalk.com. You will need to buy him an unlocked Storm so that it can work on a local Iranian carrier network.

Will the Tour sync with MS Outlook; also what operating system is utilized in order to price other available software. I am particularly interested in a password protection program usable on Windows and the Tour.
-Craig S. Clark

  • Re: Multi 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: Multi 0 Post(s) Reply Yes, the Tour will sync with MS Outlook. The OS utilized is the BlackBerry 4.6 version. The Tour also comes with an encrypted password protection application, so you may want to start with that.

I would like to know the total monthly cost for the nationwide select 900 plan. I presently have Sprint with full replacement insurance. I have a great plan but am considering a change to get better coverage. Also, when would the roaming charge apply?
-Lila Rich

  • Re: cost 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: cost 0 Post(s) Reply The Select 900 is $79.99/month with unlimited messaging. Verizon generally has the best coverage, but to be sure, check out the following coverage locator link: http://vzwmap.verizonwireless.com/dotcom/coveragelocator/default.aspx?requestfrom=webagent&coveragetype=broadband&zip=94105&city=San%20Francisco&state=CA. You are generally notified when you are entering roaming coverage.

What does the SIM card actually do? Do you need it? What does it change? Does it affect anything?
-Sarah

  • Re: Blackberry tour 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: Blackberry tour 0 Post(s) Reply The SIM card is only necessary if you plan to use the Tour internationally. Most countries outside of the U.S. run on GSM networks, which require SIM cards to operate. The Tour already has a pre-loaded SIM card, so you don't need to do anything on your end. When using it in the U.S., the Tour will be running on CDMA technology.

Can it be used in Indonesia? Do all the phones come with the writing Verizon although you buy it outright?
-Leo

  • Re: blackberry tour 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: blackberry tour 0 Post(s) Reply Yes, all Verizon Tour's will say "Verizon" on them, even if you purchase it outright. The phone would work in Indonesia, but it would not operate on local carrier networks. You would be paying rather high roaming fees to Verizon Wireless. So if you plan on using the Tour extensively there, I would recommend looking into an unlocked device.

The specs mention bluetooth stereo, but is there Bluetooth support for hands off operation in a car, and for connection to a bluetooth-enabled laptop?
-glarge

  • Re: Bluetooth 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: Bluetooth 0 Post(s) Reply Yes, it's still compatible. bluetooth stereo means that the customer can hear the phone conversation from both speakers (e.g. ear bud headphones) rather than just one ear. This feature is common with the higher-end devices and does not take away from its ability to work with bluetooth car systems or bluetooth enabled laptops.

-manda

  • Re: data package 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: data package 0 Post(s) Reply Verizon Wireless requires all BlackBerry and PDA device customers to either take a data package ($29.99 or $44.99) in addition to their monthly plan or take a monthly service plan option that includes unlimited data. Most of the other major U.S. carriers either do the same or are starting to do so.

I recently bought a tour and can't figure out how to do local searches. The phone will not give me directions to a location from the phones location instead it requires me to enter a starting address. I travel a lot and need directions while moving in my vehicle... is this an option or do I need a different phone? ! ?
-Tim Jones

  • Re: GPS problem 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: GPS problem 0 Post(s) Reply It depends which GPS application you are using. If you are using Blackberry Maps you are able to pinpoint your location and find directions from there. Open the maps application, click the menu key and select Get Directions. then select Where I Am as your starting location. Enter an end address or select a precreated location as your final destination. You will be able to perform the functions you desire on your phone.

-Cliff Starks

  • Re: Overseas 0 Post(s) Reply

Re: Overseas 0 Post(s) Reply Using your phone overseas depends on the phone as well as the network. Since you have a CDMA/GSM phone, you should be able to roam in Turkey. Check to see if your sim card is in. If you still can't get coverage, consider calling Verizon to unlock the GSM part of the phone and use a local sim card.

Expert Reviews of BlackBerry® Tour™ 9630 (Verizon Wireless)

Expert Rating: 4.0
by Joni Blecher -- July 31st 2009

The BlackBerry Tour 9630 is a true world phone with the ability to work on both CDMA networks locally and GSM networks abroad. It is packed with many of the features busy executives will look for in a smartphone including access to mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. For those who are more social, it’s easy to stay connected to popular social networking sites such as MySpace and FaceBook. The only item really missing in this otherwise well-rounded BlackBerry is the inclusion of WiFi support.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews of the BlackBerry® Tour™ 9630 (Verizon Wireless)

Customer Rating: 5
by Jude Charles -- October 5th 2009 -- Pompano Beach, FL

I'm a big blackberry fanatic and I've owned the Blackberry Curve for 2 years now. To upgrade to the Blackberry Tour was the best thing I could ever do. The phone is more dependable and reliable, the internet is faster, I can seemingly do anything and everything from my phone that I can do from a computer. And as I love to say, the blackberry can do everything the iPhone can do, but its just not touchscreen. (Which to me, not having touchscreen is bettter) If you have a Crackberry or have owned one in the past, this is the best phone to get. If you're new to the blackberry world, it will take some time getting use to, but you'll love this phone in the end.
